In-School Mentoring (ISM) is operated by Big Brothers & Big Sister in partnership with School District #27. WHAT DOES A MENTOR DO? Besides crafting, telling stories or kicking a soccer ball during the workday, you’ll be a role model to one student. Through friendship, guidance and sharing mentors help build a child’s self-esteem. Aboriginal children are matched with an Aboriginal adult who provides positive role modeling and support. You may wish to share information on your culture through traditional crafts and stories. MENTORING MAKES A DIFFERENCE Children who spend time with a mentor gain confidence, acquire new skills and competencies, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others. With ISM Experience: • 64% of children developed higher levels of self-esteem • 88% showed improved literacy skills • 90% of mentors saw a positive change in the child they were mentoring. BECOME A MENTOR You will awaken the gifts, increase knowledge and power, build self-esteem and guide future dreams. “I see the large number of Aboriginal youth that are dropping out of school and heading for the streets. Big Brothers & Big Sisters have a proven program that supports children during an impressionable time in their lives. Positive role modeling by Aboriginal Mentors build pride in their heritage and build self-esteem in the children, which will ultimately reflect in their ability to stay in school.” Joe Alphonse – Chief, Tletinqox (Anaham) Band “I am particularly gratified by this meaningful intervention at my inner-city school. High absenteeism is a regular occurrence; regardless of home difficulties, these students are at school on the day their mentor is scheduled.” Judy Davis - Elementary School Counsellor We encourage employers to allow employees the time during the work day to volunteer…studies show that people who volunteer perform better on the job. We can provide information to your employer on how mentoring will benefit the child, yourself and your place of business.
